Spontaneous Construction with Creative Planning - an Example:
But the single most remarkable instance of spontaneous construction that we have witnessed was with a young girl under two years of age who built one elaborate construction after another over the space of two hours without respite. At no time did she repeat herself. Nor did she constrain herself to any identifiable mode.
She was constructing with XoxToy's SystemXox 3000. The Xox systems allow for:
- hub only constructions,
- rod only constructions (although they are not particularly interesting),
- mostly hub constructions,
- mostly rod constructions,
- space filling constructions,
- mostly open constructions,
- very open constructions (e.g., logarithmic spirals)
- plus other modes.
She ranged through all of the above modes. Ranging over a wide range of modes is not typical. Most children use a small subset for fairly long periods of time.
Further research with the same subject has led us to the conclusion that she would not have accomplished the same elaboration of spontaneous constructions with any other currently available construction toy.
SystmeXox 3000 has only three part types:
- Hub
- Short Rod
- Long Rod
but is a fully potent hub and rod system (see hub and rod section).
The Xox systems are elegantly powerful but conceptually simple. Its use of a genderless connector tremendously increases the potency of hub and rod systems while simultaneously simplifying them.
